Like the cicada brood that is about to emerge after years in hibernation, American consumers are about to reappear after their own self-imposed period buried deep within their homes.
For both groups, it’s going to be noisy, a little reckless and very much a wild time.
For those who haven’t been following the insect world, the 2021 cicadas, known as Brood X, are the biggest of the 15 known broods and they are about to appear in large swaths of the Middle Atlantic and Midwestern states, numbering in the trillions. These cicadas — kind of a cross between a giant fly and a stinger-less bee — have been underground for the past 17 years and their appearance is going to be massive, if largely unharmful given their nature.
