A grey wolf whose 935-mile solitary trek from Oregon to California fascinated wildlife experts earlier this year has died in an apparent vehicle collision, California officials said Wednesday, after the wolf made it further south than any other known member of its species since wolves largely disappeared from the Golden State almost a century ago.

A truck driver spotted the dead wolf — named OR-93 — two weeks ago near an interstate in rural Kern County, California, about 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said it appeared to die from a vehicle strike.
